Lesson 1 of 5

What Actually Causes a Tantrum?

A tantrum is rarely about the thing in front of you. It's a nervous system that has run out of capacity — and a child who doesn't yet have the words for it.

Your job in the moment isn't to teach. It's to stay steady enough that they can borrow your calm.

Tantrums

What Actually Causes a Tantrum?

Ms. Hanein Aldhanhani • 9 min read

Most difficult moments follow a pattern. Not the same words, not the same room — but the same shape. Something is asked. Something is refused. And within seconds you are both somewhere neither of you intended to be.

Insight

Triggers are rarely the cause. They are the last thing to arrive before capacity runs out.

Once you can name the pattern, you can interrupt it earlier — before it needs managing. That's the whole skill: earlier, not louder.

"You are not trying to win the moment. You are trying to stay available in it."

This week, write down three moments that turned. Not what your child did — what happened in the ten minutes before. Hunger, transition, tiredness, noise. The list will start repeating itself faster than you expect.

Once you can see the repetition, you can plan around it. That is the difference between reacting to behaviour and shaping the conditions that produce it.
